Electrical Power System Studies

Electrical calculations, power system modelling and engineering studies for industrial facilities, commercial buildings, energy infrastructure and data centers. An AI-native approach, from utility connection to the loads that power your project.

Discuss your project

Across sectors. Around your project.

Industrial facilities and process plants. Commercial buildings and campuses. Energy infrastructure and onsite generation. Data centers and other critical facilities.

New designs, extensions and existing installations have different requirements. We agree the relevant studies around your network, project stage and operating conditions.

A connected view of your power system.

Utility supplies, onsite generation, motors and critical loads can place different demands on an electrical network. We define the study scope around your single-line diagram, equipment data, operating scenarios and project stage.

  1. Electrical Load Assessment

Build a load schedule covering process equipment, motors, HVAC, lighting, IT and other project loads. Assess connected and demand loads, diversity assumptions, planned growth and operating scenarios to establish the basis for equipment capacity and subsequent studies.

  2. Load Flow Analysis

Evaluate power flows, bus voltages, equipment loading and losses across the electrical network. Compare normal operation, maintenance configurations and agreed contingency scenarios to identify overloaded equipment, voltage constraints and capacity limitations.

  3. Short-Circuit Analysis

Calculate prospective fault currents at selected network locations using the available utility and equipment data. Review switchgear and protective device ratings against the calculated duties, including the contribution of generators and motors where applicable.

  4. Protection Coordination and Selectivity Study

Assess how protective devices operate together during faults. Review time-current curves, proposed settings and selectivity across utility, generator and UPS supply paths, with attention to fault clearance and continuity of supply to critical loads.

  5. Arc Flash Hazard Analysis

Assess incident energy and arc flash boundaries at the equipment included in the study. Consider fault current, protective device clearing times and operating modes. Calculation assumptions, the applicable method and required report or label outputs are established in the project scope.

  6. Cable and Busbar Sizing

Evaluate conductor and busbar sizing against load current, installation conditions, voltage drop and short-circuit withstand requirements. Review the selected sizes alongside protective device characteristics and the installation information supplied for the project.

  7. UPS and Battery Sizing

Assess UPS capacity and battery autonomy against the critical load profile, redundancy arrangement and required backup time. Review efficiency, battery characteristics, ageing allowances and environmental assumptions using the relevant manufacturer data.

  8. Generator Sizing and Dynamic Performance Study

Evaluate generator capacity for the agreed load profile and operating sequence. Examine step-load response, voltage and frequency behaviour, motor starting and interactions with UPS systems where supported by the available equipment models and project scope.

  9. Harmonic Analysis

Assess harmonic distortion associated with nonlinear loads such as UPS systems and variable-speed drives. Review network impedance, potential resonance and mitigation options across the defined operating scenarios, using manufacturer harmonic data or site measurements where available.

  10. Motor Starting and Acceleration Study

Evaluate starting current, voltage dip and acceleration for significant motor loads, including pumps, fans, compressors and process equipment. Compare starting methods and sequences, and assess their effect on the network under utility and generator supply conditions.

Before we begin.

Can you scope a study from an existing SLD?

Yes. A single-line diagram is a useful starting point. Share the project stage and the calculations you need, and we can identify the equipment data and operating scenarios required to define the scope. Contact us first to agree how project files should be shared.

Do I need all ten studies?

The required studies depend on your design stage, network configuration and project requirements. A load assessment may establish the design basis, while fault levels and protection settings inform coordination and arc flash work. We agree the relevant studies and their dependencies before starting.

How is AI used?

AI supports electrical modelling and study preparation workflows. Project-specific input data, assumptions and engineering review remain part of the study process. The calculation scope, software, review responsibilities and deliverables are agreed for each engagement.

How do I request a proposal?

Email info@ohmvix.com with your project stage, required studies and target schedule. Include a brief description of the supply arrangement and available documentation so we can discuss the next step.
